I love sport and business and it’s interesting there are so many similarities between the two.
There are also some aspects where business can learn from sport:
You can’t have individuals to win…there is no ‘I’ in ‘Team’, as a mate of mine always tells me!
You need to have each other's back and trust each other.
Without these, a sports team cannot win.
Yet many businesses don’t have common and shared goals for their team.
Every sports team plays to win, yet most businesses don't know what winning looks like.
Winning might be hitting financial targets for a business, but the focus must be on how you get there.
You don't play sports without a scoreboard.
Yet many businesses don't have a scoreboard for their team.
It must be visible with a regular focus and include the key drivers of the business growth.
Players on sports teams are clear on the outcomes their role provides the team, and they keep each other accountable.
This is built on trust.
Success is driven by a strong culture, which tends to be sustainable and lead by the coach (CEO).
‘Star’ players, or team members, do not contribute to culture if they don’t live by their core values.
Defining your true core values doesn’t happen overnight, which is why many successful sports teams are for winners many seasons.
At the Grow A Small Business online Community, we have some tools, recommend the best books and other resources to help you develop your team, the culture and core values, roll out a scoreboard and set your quarterly strategy.
